ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) is a framework in which a set of good practices and recommendations for the proper management of IT services is described.

ITIL v3 provides a life cycle approach to properly manage IT services. It consists on a set of five books, each of these books is a phase of life cycle management of IT services.

Below is a brief explanation of each of the phases of ITIL is responsible:

1) Service Strategy: this phase of the life cycle is responsible for the design, development and implementation of IT services as an asset to the organization.

2) Service Design: This phase of the life cycle is responsible for the design and development of services and processes that are needed within the organization for those services.

3) Service Transition: This stage of the life cycle is responsible for the management and coordination of processes, systems and functions. Of all the processes, systems and functions only handles the ones that are necessary in the stages of development, testing and implementation of new or modified services.

4) Service Operations: this phase of the life cycle is responsible for the coordination of activities and processes required to manage those services to customers.

5) Continuous improvement: this phase of the life cycle is responsible for improving the services of the organization in a constant way, with the aim of ensuring that the services provided are completely tailored to the needs of the business.

At the individual level it is noteworthy that there are four possible levels of certification that people can get about ITIL. The levels are:

- ITIL Foundation.

- ITIL Intermediate.

- ITIL Expert.

- ITIL Master.
